Bardee was an Australian deep-tech startup founded in 2019, aiming to revolutionize waste management and sustainable food production. The company utilized black soldier fly larvae to upcycle food waste into high-protein insect-based ingredients for animal feed and nutrient-rich organic fertilizers. By creating a closed-loop system, Bardee sought to reduce landfill waste and lower carbon emissions. Backed by investors like Blackbird Ventures, it raised $5 million in funding in 2021 to expand its operations. However, despite its innovative approach and environmental impact, the company faced financial difficulties. In May 2024, the Supreme Court of Victoria ordered Bardee’s liquidation, leading to the shutdown of its operations. Although the company no longer exists, its pioneering work in sustainable waste-to-protein conversion remains an important case study in circular economy solutions.
