International Plant Treaty
The International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (International Plant Treaty), under the FAO, is a pivotal agreement addressing global food security challenges. It aims to conserve plant genetic diversity, ensure its sustainable use, and facilitate fair and equitable sharing of benefits derived from these resources. The treaty establishes a Multilateral System for easy exchange of genetic material among member countries, fostering collaboration in agricultural innovation. Recognizing the invaluable role of farmers, it emphasizes Farmers’ Rights, advocating for their contributions in maintaining genetic diversity. Its Global Information System promotes knowledge sharing, enhancing resource management worldwide.
The treaty also supports funding mechanisms to implement conservation initiatives and enhance global agricultural sustainability. By preserving biodiversity and promoting sustainable agricultural practices, the treaty ensures the resilience of food systems to address climate change, population growth, and future challenges.
