Mushroom Packaging produces high-performing, sustainable packaging solutions grown from mycelium, the “roots” of mushrooms. Called MycoComposite™, this material is made with two simple ingredients — mycelium and hemp hurd offering a regenerative alternative for the plastic foams used in protective packaging. Unlike plastics, this packaging is home-compostable in 45 days, adding nutrients to the soil instead of pollution. Mushroom Packaging is also a cost- and performance-competitive solution for custom-molded products. Their designers generate a 3D model of the required Mushroom Packaging , then insert and route a positive using a CNC machine. After that thermoform the positive to make growth trays , which are reused numerous of times. The trays are filled with our hemp hurd and mycelium blend which grow for 4 days. The grown parts are removed from the tray and continue to grow for 2 more days to create a velvety layer of over growth. The parts are dried to disable future growth. Thus the Mushroom Packaging is ready to protect the product in shipment.
