Founded in 2020, it brings together a diverse community of individuals—called "collectors"—who work on projects aimed at both researching and advocating for CDR solutions. These efforts are organized into missions that focus on technology development, policy advocacy, and knowledge-sharing. The collective operates without traditional organizational structures, relying on self-directed contributions and collaborations among members. OpenAir's missions include creating open-source CDR technologies, influencing local and national policies, and engaging in educational outreach to increase support for carbon removal. By embracing radical openness and inclusivity, the collective fosters creativity and agility, enabling the acceleration of solutions that may be overlooked by formal institutions. The collective’s focus remains on making substantial progress in CDR as a vital tool to combat climate change.
