The BC Access to Justice Centre for Excellence (BC ACE) at the University of Victoria Faculty of Law focuses on improving access to justice through research, innovation, and collaboration. Established in response to calls from the Canadian Bar Association, BC ACE addresses gaps in justice system metrics, data, and evidence-based reform. It spearheads initiatives like the Justice Data and Design Lab, leveraging machine learning to analyze legal needs, and interdisciplinary projects that combine insights from law, technology, and public administration. BC ACE also leads workshops, such as the People-Centred Justice series, and conducts research on themes like AI regulation, virtual hearings, and equity in legal education. Supported by partnerships with organizations like the Law Foundation of BC, BC ACE actively develops prototypes and strategies to enhance access to justice for underserved communities. By focusing on people-centred justice, BC ACE reimagines the legal system to meet the needs of modern society effectively.
