B:bot, developed by the French startup GreenBig, is an innovative reverse vending machine designed to revolutionize the recycling of PET plastic bottles. Occupying less than one square meter, B:bot streamlines the recycling process by accepting used PET bottles, scanning their barcodes to identify and sort them by color, and then shredding them into plastic flakes on-site. This immediate transformation reduces the volume of the bottles by up to ten times, significantly optimizing storage and transportation logistics. The machine can process up to 30 bottles per minute and has a storage capacity of approximately 3,000 shredded bottles. By densifying the material at the source, B:bot eliminates several intermediary steps typically involved in recycling, thereby enhancing efficiency and reducing costs. The collected plastic flakes are then sold directly to beverage manufacturers, promoting a circular economy where recycled material is reintroduced into the production cycle. Additionally, B:bot incentivizes consumer participation by offering rewards for each bottle deposited, which can be redeemed as vouchers or donated to charities. This approach not only simplifies the recycling process but also actively engages consumers in sustainable practices.
