Code Effort, founded in 2018 by Naman Gupta and Vipul Gupta in Noida, Uttar Pradesh, is a pioneering social enterprise dedicated to combating one of the world's most overlooked environmental hazards: cigarette butt waste. Recognizing that cigarette filters are made of cellulose acetate (a type of plastic) and take over a decade to decompose, the brothers developed an innovative end-to-end recycling mechanism. The company systematically collects cigarette waste through its proprietary V-Bins and a vast network of ragpickers. Every component of the cigarette butt is recycled—the residual tobacco and ash are turned into compost powder, the paper is transformed into recycled A4 sheets and mosquito repellents, and the cellulose acetate polymer is chemically cleaned and converted into safe, non-toxic stuffing for soft toys, cushions, and mattresses. By employing rural women artisans for product manufacturing and creating an alternative income stream for waste collectors, Code Effort empowers marginalized communities while offering consumers sustainable, authentically upcycled lifestyle products.

Method and technique
Method and Technique of Code Effort are:
Specialized Source Collection Infrastructure: The enterprise utilizes a highly targeted waste procurement method, actively deploying proprietary V-Bins across commercial smoking zones, corporate offices, and public spaces to successfully ensure the immediate and segregated collection of discarded cigarette butts directly at the source.
Decentralized Ragpicker Procurement Network: Code Effort employs a deeply inclusive and socio-economic supply chain technique, deliberately partnering with thousands of traditional ragpickers across numerous districts to manually collect scattered cigarette litter, successfully providing fair financial compensation while rapidly scaling their national waste recovery operations.
Comprehensive Component Segregation: They utilize a highly systematic material sorting method, actively separating the collected cigarette butts into three distinct raw components—the cellulose acetate polymer filter, the residual tobacco, and the outer paper wrapping—successfully ensuring that each part can be directed toward its specific recycling stream.
Organic Tobacco Composting: The organization employs a highly natural and biological degradation technique, meticulously treating the segregated residual tobacco and ash with specialized bacterial and fungal cultures sourced from fertilizer companies, successfully converting the toxic waste into nutrient-rich compost powder for local nurseries.
Chemical Purification of Polymer Fibers: Code Effort utilizes an incredibly strict and health-conscious material engineering method, carefully subjecting the toxic cellulose acetate filters to an intensive, ISO-certified chemical cleaning and bleaching process, successfully neutralizing all harmful residues, heavy metals, and odors to produce safe, fluffy stuffing fibers.
Artisanal Product Assembly and Fabrication: They employ a highly empowering, localized manufacturing technique, actively deploying a dedicated team of skilled rural women artisans in Noida to manually craft, sew, and stuff the purified polymer fibers into premium soft toys, cushions, and comfortable mattresses for direct-to-consumer retail.
