About

SriLand is a socially responsible enterprise based in Kahawa, Sri Lanka, dedicated to developing a sustainable village-based economy. The organization beautifully merges the island's rich traditions of herbal medicine with artisanal textile production to create handmade clothing, accessories, and housewares. By carefully collecting local roots, bark, and leaves, SriLand produces natural, plant-based dyes that are applied to high-quality cotton yarn. This yarn is then skillfully woven by local artisans using traditional wooden handlooms, ensuring a zero-emission manufacturing process that is both good for the skin and the environment. Beyond creating eco-conscious textiles sold at their Hikkaduwa outlet, SriLand is deeply committed to circular economy principles; all production waste is fully biodegradable and repurposed into compost for local agriculture. The enterprise operates on fair trade principles, providing ethical employment to rural communities. Furthermore, a portion of their profits is directly reinvested into health and educational development programs for village children in Kahawa.

Sustainability Claim

  • Handmade by artisans

A Sri Lankan enterprise merging herbal medicine and handloom weaving to support rural village economies.

The Traditional Herbal Dyeing And Wooden Handloom Weaving Methodology Implemented By SriLand In Kahawa.

Method and Technique of SriLand are:

  1. Raw Botanical Material Foraging and Harvesting: The production team utilizes a sustainable gathering method to source local roots, bark, and leaves from the surrounding environment, ensuring that the harvesting process does not deplete the natural herbal resources of the Sri Lankan ecosystem.

  2. Herbal Pigment Extraction and Boiling: SriLand employs a traditional thermal extraction technique where the gathered botanical materials are carefully boiled in large vats to release their natural pigments and medicinal properties into a concentrated, chemical-free liquid dye bath.

  3. Natural Cotton Yarn Dyeing and Saturation: They utilize an immersion dyeing method where high-quality raw cotton yarn is submerged into the heated herbal extracts, allowing the natural fibers to deeply absorb the rich colors and skin-soothing properties before being air-dried.

  4. Traditional Wooden Handloom Weaving: The organization employs a manual textile fabrication technique utilizing ancestral wooden handlooms, requiring highly skilled artisans to interlace the dyed yarns into durable, breathable fabrics without the use of electricity or automated machinery.

  5. Biodegradable Waste Composting Protocol: SriLand utilizes an agricultural waste-recovery method where all organic textile scraps and residual plant matter from the dyeing process are collected and systematically broken down into compost to fertilize local village farming plots.

  6. Integrated Community Philanthropy Allocation: They employ a social enterprise financial method where the revenue generated from their Hikkaduwa retail outlet is tracked, and a dedicated portion is directly distributed to fund grassroots educational and healthcare programs for Kahawa's children.
