Clare, Ireland
Appleoak FibreWorks Ltd. is a pioneering natural dyeing company that specializes in sustainable and eco-friendly techniques. They focus on using organic and natural materials for their dyeing processes, ensuring that all their dyes are sourced as organically as possible. The company’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond just materials; they operate on a circular economy model, using only harvested rainwater and growing their own dye plants for seed saving and dye supply. Waste from the dyeing process, such as used dye matter and excess cardboard, is composted in their wormery to create rich compost for growing more dye plants. In addition, all wastewater is carefully filtered through engineered plant filters and is then discharged drop by drop into an evergreen woodland. Appleoak FibreWorks is dedicated to promoting sustainable, natural dyeing practices while minimizing its environmental impact at every step.

Apple Oak Fibre Works
1.Use of Organic and Natural Materials: The company exclusively uses natural protein (wool, silk) and plant-based fibres (hemp, linen) and sources organic natural dyes whenever possible.
2.Locally Grown Dye Plants and Seed Saving: They grow a portion of their own dye plants and engage in seed saving, which is a key part of their sustainable lifecycle and educational outreach.
3.Low-Temperature Dyeing: All dye extraction and application processes are conducted at low temperatures (between 40°C and 85°C), which is better for the environment and preserves the softness and integrity of the yarn.
4.Cold Mordanting: Yarns are often mordanted in cold baths for 48+ hours, which allows the mordant to penetrate the fibre gently and keeps the yarn soft.
5.Water Conservation and Rainwater Harvesting: All water used in their process is harvested rainwater. This water is filtered and reused within a closed-loop system.
6.Circular Wastewater Treatment: Wastewater from the dyeing process is meticulously filtered through a system of settlement tanks and engineered plant and gravel filters before being discharged drop-by-drop into a woodland area, acting as a final biological filter.
7.Wormery Composting: All solid organic waste, including used dye plant matter, excess cardboard, and food waste, is composted in their wormery, creating nutrient-rich compost used to grow more dye plants.
8.Dye Bath Exhaustion and Reuse: Dye baths and mordanting baths are repeatedly used (exhausted) for multiple batches of fibre to maximize the use of the natural dyes and chemicals before the water enters the filtration system.
