Homalomena rubescens 'Maggy', also called shield plant or queen of hearts, is native to Assam and Bangladesh, where it grows on damp, humid rainforest floors under dappled light. Jiffy Plants sells it as a well-rooted plant with a pot. A lesser-known relative of philodendrons, it can reach about 1.3 metres tall with a 1 metre spread. The seller recommends medium, filtered indirect light, moist but never waterlogged soil, 16 to 32°C and a free-draining organic mix. It grows best when slightly root-bound and is poisonous, so it should be kept away from pets and children.
