Maranta leuconeura, the prayer plant, has oval leaves patterned with herringbone veins in red, light green and dark green, which fold upward at night. Native to the rainforests of Brazil, it is compact enough for tabletops, terrariums and shaded balconies. Jiffy Plants sells it as a well-rooted plant, offered in a jiffy bag or with a 2.5 inch pot. The nursery recommends bright, indirect light, 18 to 28°C, humidity of 60% or above, and soil kept moist but not soggy, watered when the top 2 to 3 cm feel dry, ideally with filtered or rainwater. A light mix of coco peat, compost and perlite suits it, with a half-strength feed every three to four weeks in the growing season.
